Becky's Notes

July 2008

(July 1) ~

Welcome to July, and here’s wishes in advance for a great 4th! :)

Our summer jazz/big band, the Swingin’ Saints, has 2 concerts this month:

Monday, July 7, 7:00pm at Mt. Healthy Christian Home

Monday, July 28, 7:00pm at The Knolls of Oxford

As always, these are free concerts and open to the public. We have 18 in the group this year, and it’s a big sound. We hope you can join us for on our “tour.”

I would like to extend a very, very sincere thank you to the girls who helped me with Vacation Bible School last week: Maggie Clem, Elyse Kautz, Mindy, and Stephy. Their energy and leadership helped me out tremendously, and they really did such a great job. Thanks!

I will be taking leave this month as of Monday, July 14. My planned return date is Wednesday, September 17. I would like to say a big thank you in advance to Bob Burnette for covering the 8:00am services and to Danny Brown and Dan Kautz for leading 3:23 for the 9:30am and 11:00am services. I look forward to coming back and kicking off our fall music ministry with you.

Peace and God bless!

Slainte,                                                                                                                    Becky

(June 2) ~

Wow - June! The big thing is that Swingin’ Saints is starting tonight and will continue until the end of July. You may view the concert schedule on the Swingin’ Saints page. I’m letting my co-directors, Dave Jarman and Nick Hupp, take over this group - I’ve been acting as more of a “booking agent” this year. Dave and Nick have picked some really, really good stuff (including a Blues Brothers medley) - you won’t want to miss this.

Beginning this Sunday, June 8, the 9:30am service will move outdoors (outdoor sanctuary - weather permitting). Also, June 8 is our Celebration of Marriage & Family Sunday, so married couples, come and renew those wedding vows! We will be doing vow renewal at all 3 Sunday morning services.

Speaking of outdoor services, our Wednesday evening service will be heading outdoors starting this week as well.

Vacation Bible School is also coming up (June 23-27). I will be helping with the music portion for this but am requesting the help of any musical volunteers as well. If you are interested in helping out, please contact me. :)

(May 29) ~

In looking ahead, we will begin our summer outdoor services at 9:30am starting Sunday, June 8 (weather permitting), and that service will continue in our outdoor sanctuary through the end of August.

(May 7) ~

Here we are in May, and things are starting to wind down for the season. Clann na Clairsi will be playing their last performance for the season this Sunday, May 11, at the 8:00am service. Our Chancel Choir sang their last seasonal song on Sunday, May 4. Our children’s choirs (Cherub Choir and Joyful Noise) sang their final performance combined with the Sunday school children at the 20th anniversary celebration on April 20.

Ok, so that’s what is ending/has ended, but we have our summer time jazz/big band, the Swingin’ Saints, coming up. Rehearsals begin on Monday, June 2, 6:30-7:45pm. There are 3 directors for this group: Dave Jarman, Nick Hupp, and myself. I am currently working on booking all the summer tour concert dates and will post those ASAP.

So, I’ve told you about what’s ended, I’ve told you about what’s coming this summer, but I have more: we have some new things in the works for this fall ...

Our 3 octave hand chime choir, Christ Chimes, will be looking to start up again. If we have enough folks to play (and this group is open to all ages), then it shall return for the 2008-9 season. Rehearsal time and dates TBA.

The Cherub Choir and Joyful Noise were on a monthly rotating rehearsal basis this past season. There are 2 changes in store for these children’s choirs: 1) each choir will be rehearsing on a weekly basis and 2) I will be directing both of these groups. Rehearsal times and dates TBA.

And finally, I will be directing a new ensemble (it’s actually 2 ensembles in 1) for our jr./sr. high age musicians: a show choir! The show choir’s name is AmazinGrace (yes, all 1 word), and the accompanying band is GraceNotes. Both the singers and instrumentalists will have weekly rehearsals. These groups are for ages 6th-12th grade. All are welcome to participate. Singers will not only be singing (obviously), but I will be teaching them choreography to dance with the songs. I’ve done some research, and I’ve not seen a church show choir anywhere, so this will definitely make Lord of Life unique (and hey, I like to offer unique musical opportunities - different is good). The song repertoire will consist of contemporary Christian rock/pop/alternative. Rehearsal times and dates TBA.

On a whole other note, some of you have been asking about my leave. Although I can’t give specific dates yet, I want to assure everyone that I already have plans in place musically in my absence. Bob Burnette will be covering the 8:00am service as well as the Wednesday evening services. 3:23’s band leaders will be a shared responsibility between Danny Brown and Dan Kautz. Elyse Kautz will be filling in on the keyboard.

I would also like to thank those of you who gave me hymn suggestions for the 8:00am service (and they were good ones too!). Remember, if anyone would like to sing something either in the ELW or a traditional hymn not found in the ELW, please just let me know. I’m happy to accommodate requests. :)

That’s it for now. Peace and God bless!
